Mākena Landing Restoration Project Update
March 18, 2025: Due to recent storms, to minimize hazards to preservation sites, property, pedestrians or vehicles, trimming and removal of select kiawe trees took place on March 31, 2025. This effort continued the work to better support safety and the ecosystem.
Mākena Landing parking lot and beach park remained open and accessible to the public.
2024: Mākena Landing Restoration Project
Due to heavy winds that occasionally visited Mākena Landing, 40 ft. kiawe trees had fallen into the ocean, damaging the reef. An effort was initiated to restore native and place-appropriate shade trees that better supported safety and the ecosystem.
Phase 1: Q3 2024 - Received feedback and support from local homeowners.
Phase 2: Q4 2024 - Removal of kiawe trees in preparation for winter storms and for health and safety of the ecosystem.
Phase 3: Q4 2024 - Native and place-appropriate shade trees were replanted on December 8, 2024 including Milo, Kukui, Kou and a Heliotrope.
WHERE IS MĀKENA LANDING PARK?
The area known as Mākena Landing Park is the parcel surrounding the Mākena Landing Park parking lot, the restrooms, and lawn. TMK (2) 2-1-07:094
IS MĀKENALANDING PARK AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC?
Yes. The area at the Mākena Landing Park parking lot, the restrooms, and lawn area are open to the public from
7 a.m. - 8 p.m. daily.
IS MĀKENA LANDING PARK PRIVATELY OWNED?
Yes. The Mākena Landing Park is privately owned by ATC Mākena. This parcel is part of a Parks Agreement with the County of Maui that allows public recreational use only.
WHO MAINTAINS THE MĀKENA LANDING PARK?
The park is maintained by Mākena Golf and Beach Club.
WHO/WHAT IS MĀKENA GOLF AND BEACH CLUB?
Mākena Golf & Beach Club is the operations entity of ATC Mākena, and the name of the development project.
WHAT ARE THE PROHIBITED USES AT MĀKENA LANDING PARK?
Prohibited uses include: commercial activity, alcoholic beverages, open fires, hunting, camping, and vending.
IS THE SHORELINE AREA TO THE SOUTH OF MĀKENA LANDING PARK PART OF THE MĀKENA LANDING PARK?
No. The shoreline to the South near the bottom of Honoiki St. is not part of the Mākena Landing Park. Public beach/shoreline access is provided in this area via the State of Hawai'i-owned parcel, TMK (2) 2-107:083.
CAN I USE THE PARCEL TO THE SOUTH OF MĀKENALANDING PARK THAT IS OWNED BY ATC MĀKENA?
No. This parcel that is located between the beach/shoreline and Makena Road is private property and is currently not available to the public. TMK (2) 2-1-07:093. The prohibited uses here include: public access, commercial activity, alcoholic beverages, open fires, hunting, camping, and vending.
CAN I USE THE BEACH/SHORELINE ALONG THIS ATC MĀKENA-OWNED PARCEL, TMK (2) 2-1-07:093?
Yes. The public has access to the shoreline of the private property via the State of Hawai'i-owned parcel to the South, TMK (2) 2-1-07:083.
